    New HST Observations of the Halo Gas of NGC 3067: Limits on the Extragalactic Ionizing Background at Low Redshift and the Lyman Continuum Escape Fraction

    We present UV spectroscopy from HST/GHRS and reanalyze existing H_alpha images of the quasar/galaxy pair 3C 232/NGC 3067 and of the halo gas associated with NGC 3067. The spectra permit measurement of, or limits on, the column densities of Fe I, Fe II, Mg I, and Mg II in the absorbing cloud. Two distinct models of the extragalactic radiation field are considered: (1) the ionizing spectrum is dominated by a power-law extragalactic continuum, and (2) the power-law spectrum contains a Lyman break, implying enhanced flux longward of 912 A relative to the hydrogen-ionizing flux. The H_alpha images constrain the escape fraction of Lyman continuum photons from the galaxy to f_esc <= 0.02. With the assumption that the cloud is shielded from all galactic contributions, we can constrain the intensity and shape of the extragalactic continuum. For an AGN-dominated power-law extragalactic spectrum, we derive a limit on the extragalactic ionizing flux Phi_ion >= 2600 photons cm^-2 s^-1, or I_0 >= 10^-23 erg cm^-2 s^-1 Hz^-1 sr^-1 for an ionizing spectrum with power-law index of 1.8 and a cloud of constant density. When combined with previous upper limits from the absence of H_alpha recombination emission from intergalactic clouds, our observations require 2600 <= Phi_ion <= 10000 photons cm^-2 s^-1. We show that if galactic contributions to the incident radiation are important, it is difficult to constrain Phi_ion.     Extra-nuclear starbursts: Young luminous hinge clumps in interacting galaxies

    Hinge clumps are luminous knots of star formation near the base of tidal features in some interacting galaxies. We use archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) UV/optical/IR images and Chandra X-ray maps along with Galaxy Evolution Explorer UV, Spitzer IR, and ground-based optical/near-IR images to investigate the star forming properties in a sample of 12 hinge clumps in five interacting galaxies. The most extreme of these hinge clumps have star formation rates of 1-9 M ☉ yr–1, comparable to or larger than the "overlap" region of intense star formation between the two disks of the colliding galaxy system the Antennae. In the HST images, we have found remarkably large and luminous sources at the centers of these hinge clumps. These objects are much larger and more luminous than typical "super star clusters" in interacting galaxies, and are sometimes embedded in a linear ridge of fainter star clusters, consistent with star formation along a narrow caustic. These central sources have FWHM diameters of ~70 pc, compared to ~3 pc in "ordinary" super star clusters. Their absolute I magnitudes range from MI ~ – 12.2 to –16.5; thus, if they are individual star clusters they would lie near the top of the "super star cluster" luminosity function of star clusters. These sources may not be individual star clusters, but instead may be tightly packed groups of clusters that are blended together in the HST images.Comparison to population synthesis modeling indicates that the hinge clumps contain a range of stellar ages. This is consistent with expectations based on models of galaxy interactions, which suggest that star formation may be prolonged in these regions.In the Chandra images, we have found strong X-ray emission from several of these hinge clumps. In most cases, this emission is well-resolved with Chandra and has a thermal X-ray spectrum, thus it is likely due to hot gas associated with the star formation. The ratio of the extinction-corrected diffuse X-ray luminosity to the mechanical energy rate (the X-ray production efficiency) for the hinge clumps is similar to that in the Antennae galaxies, but higher than those for regions in the normal spiral galaxy NGC 2403. Two of the hinge clumps have point-like X-ray emission much brighter than expected for hot gas; these sources are likely "ultra-luminous X-ray sources" due to accretion disks around black holes. The most extreme of these sources, in Arp 240, has a hard X-ray spectrum and an absorbed X-ray luminosity of ~2 × 1041 erg s–1; this is above the luminosity expected by single high mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs), thus it may be either a collection of HMXBs or an intermediate mass black hole (≄80 M ☉)

    This paper focuses upon the wildly successful blockbuster American Pie teenpics, especially American Pie 3 – the Wedding. I argue that these films, which are sited so securely within the visual and pedagogical machinery of Hollywood culture, are specifically designed to appeal to teenage male audiences, and to provide lessons in sex and romance. Movies like this are especially important as they are experienced by far more teenagers than, for example, instructional films or other classroom materials; indeed, as Henry Giroux has observed, "teens and youth learn how to define themselves outside of the traditional sites of instruction, such as the home and the school
 Learning in the postmodern age is located elsewhere – in popular spheres that shape their identities, through forms of knowledge and desires that appear absent from what is taught in schools" (Giroux, 1997, p.49). In this paper I discuss whether the American Pie series is actually a "new age" effort which, via insubordinate performances of gender, contests the hegemonic field of signification which regulates the production of sex, gender and desire, or whether it is more accurately described as a retrogressive hetero-conservative opus with a veneer of sexual radicalism. In short, I intend to probe whether this filmic vector for sex education is all about the shaping of responsible, caring, vulnerable men, or is it guiding them to become just like their heterosexual, middle-class fathers? And whether, despite its riotous and raunchy advertising, American Pie really dishes up something spicy or something terribly wholesome instead

    A Study of the Reionization History of Intergalactic Helium with FUSE and VLT

    We obtained high-resolution VLT and FUSE spectra of the quasar HE2347-4342 to study the properties of the intergalactic medium between redshifts z=2.0-2.9. The high-quality optical spectrum allows us to identify approximately 850 HeII absorption components with column densities between N~5X10^11 and $ 10^18 cm^-2. The reprocessed FUSE spectrum extends the wavelength coverage of the HeII absorption down to an observed wavelength of 920 A. Approximately 1400 HeII absorption components are identified, including 917 HeII Ly-alpha systems and some of their HeII Ly-beta, Ly-gamma, and Ly-delta counterparts. The ionization structure of HeII is complex, with approximately 90 components that are not detected in the hydrogen spectrum. These components may represent the effect of soft ionizing sources. The ratio Eta=N(HeII)/N(HI) varies approximately from unity to more than a thousand, with a median value of 62 and a distribution consistent with the intrinsic spectral indices of quasars. This suggests that the dominant ionizing field is from the accumulated quasar radiation, with contributions from other soft sources such as star-forming regions and obscured AGN, which do not ionize helium. We find an evolution in Eta toward smaller values at lower redshift, with the gradual disappearance of soft components. At redshifts z>2.7, the large but finite increase in the HeII opacity, Tau=5+/-1, suggests that we are viewing the end stages of a reionization process that began at an earlier epoch. Fits of the absorption profiles of unblended lines indicate comparable velocities between hydrogen and He^+ ions.     Weak and strong fillability of higher dimensional contact manifolds

    For contact manifolds in dimension three, the notions of weak and strong symplectic fillability and tightness are all known to be inequivalent. We extend these facts to higher dimensions: in particular, we define a natural generalization of weak fillings and prove that it is indeed weaker (at least in dimension five),while also being obstructed by all known manifestations of "overtwistedness". We also find the first examples of contact manifolds in all dimensions that are not symplectically fillable but also cannot be called overtwisted in any reasonable sense.     The Outcomes Assessment of the Plasma Blade Technology in Upper Blepharoplasties: A Prospective Study on a Series of 25 Patients

    Background: The Dermo Ablation Surgery (DAS) MedicalŸ (Technolux, Italy) device is a plasma blade which induces a plasma voltaic arc causing a retraction in the epidermis and superficial dermis. Objective: The aim of our study is to prove the efficacy and safety of the DAS MedicalŸ device in dermatochalasis size reduction. Methods: Our prospective study included 25 adult patients presenting with upper eyelid dermatochalasis undergoing a two-session treatment protocol with the DAS MedicalŸ device (with a month treatment-free interval). The primary end point was the reduction in the size of the dermatochalasis. The secondary end points were patient satisfaction, and a blinded assessment of the outcomes was carried out by 15 plastic surgery specialists on post-procedural pictures. Results: The mean reduction in the size of the dermatochalasis was estimated at 2.47 mm on a 6-month follow-up (13.5 mm at T0 vs. 11.03 mm at 6 months, p = 0.0002) and 1.97 mm on a 12-month follow-up ((13.5 mm at T0 vs. 11.53 mm at 12 months, p = 0.0055). Eighty per cent of the patients and 78% of the assessing clinicians were globally satisfied with the results on a 12-month follow-up. The mean visual analogue pain score reported during the treatment was 4.5/10; MEOPAŸ was used in 23% of cases. No irreversible post-procedural sequelae (complications) were observed. Conclusion: Voltaic plasma arc treatment with DAS MedicalŸ is an effective technique for non-invasive blepharoplasty on moderate dermatochalasis patients not suffering from palpebral lipoptosis and is very well tolerated. It can be usefully and successfully associated with surgery. Level of Evidence IV: This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article.
